Preserving gongs and their culture

(CPV) – The Central Highlands Dak Lak provincial People’s Committee has decided to spend more than 6 billion VND from the local budget to implement a project to preserve the gongs cultural position.
From now to 2010, Dak Lak provincial People’s Committee has been assigned to work with the cultural sector and related agencies to investigate, survey and collect gongs; record the number of musicians who play the gong; collect ancient gong performances; open courses to teach how to play gongs; research and reinstate folk festivals of ethnic minority groups; and organize gong festivals.
In addition, the Dak Lak province will also supply 300 sets of gongs for communal houses in ethnic-inhabited villages.
According to the statistics in 1993, the province had nearly 4,700 sets of gongs. In 2003, this number was only 3,800. There is a decrease in number of people who know how to perform ancient gongs and adjust the gongs sounds.
The project is expected to make a great contribution to the preservation and promotion of the Central Highlands gong in the trend of international integration.
