Cambodia’s National Elections Committee (NEC) has released the official results of the country’s local elections, which took place on June 3.

Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won by a landslide, taking 1,592 out of 1,633 communes in the country’s third commune council elections.

The Sam Rainsy Party, Cambodia’s main opposition party, came second with only 22 commune seats, a drop of 6 seats from the 2007 elections, while the Human Rights Party, making its first appearance at the elections, won 18.

This year’s elections were contested by ten political parties and were attended by almost 15,000 national and international observers from various countries and non-governmental organisations, according to the NEC.

Just over 5.87 million Cambodians out of 9.2 million eligible voters cast a ballot. The local elections are held in Cambodia every five years./.
