(CPV) - Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) mission team for the “Hoi An city’s solid waste minimization project (Naha Model)”, led by Mr. Takeshi Onaga, Mayor of Naha city is visiting Hanoi and Hoi An city from August 23 – 26.
This mission team will exchange opinions with the Hoi An city People’s Committee as well as Hoi An city Division of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE) for the better implementation of the new project.
The team also participates to the “Workshop on solid waste management – Cooperation among local residents, enterprises and government“, which will jointly host by Hoi An city, Naha city, JICA on August 25 during the 10th Hoi An-Japan Festival 2012.

Naha is the largest city in Okinawa prefecture, located in southern Japan, has experience of having successfully reduced solid waste by nearly 30% from 1998 to 2011. With this experience, Naha City, in collaboration with Okinawa Citizens Recycling Movement (OCRM), has cooperated with Hoi An city in implementing a the program to promote awareness for 3R of solid waste from April 2008 to March 2010.
This cooperation program achieved some outputs including human resources development of Hoi An city in terms of 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle of solid wastes) promotion as well as the formulation of “Hoi An city solid waste treatment plan”.
Based on the achievements of the past cooperation and friendship, Hoi An city and Naha City, together with OCRM and JICA, agreed to further cooperate together to promote waste minimization in Hoi An City through enhancing citizen’s participation in 3R, and thus initiated the new project, “Hoi An city’s solid waste minimization project (Naha Model)” within 3 years from August 2012 to July 2015.
Besides, Mayor Onaga and the team will exchange with the volunteers from Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) (JOCV) and observe their activities at the Hanoi National University and in Hoi An city.
They also to visit Hanoi-based Vietnam-Ryukyu cultural technological village (a glass factory invested by an Okinawan Corporation)./.
