India celebrated its 65th Independence Day in New Delhi on August 15th 2012.

India remained under British rule for approximately 200 years before gaining sovereign powers in 1947.

On 15 August 1947, India attained freedom from British rule. Every year, August 15 is celebrated as Independence Day in India. Independence Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country.

India celebrated its Independence Day with profound reverence; obviously, even after 65 years have passed, a sense of huge achievement still lingers.

It is still hoped that India will continue to make great strides in all spheres of life, enabling its people to finally realise the dream of equitable development that will add to the real sense of achievement.

Independence Day is celebrated with flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes all over the country. The main program is held at the Red Fort where the Prime Minster unfurls the National Flag and it is saluted by guns.

The Prime Minister's speech at the Red Fort in Delhi is a major highlight. He said in his address to the nation that India's national security will be affected if steps are not taken to increase economic growth and encourage new investments in the country.

Delhi’s skyline is dotted with thousands of kites taking to the sky on this day. Similar programmes are also held at all the State capitals.

The preparations begin a month in advance. Roads are decorated with flags and bunting, and buildings of national importance are illuminated./.
