The Decision 264/2005/QD-TTg issued by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai on October 25 adopted the project on socio-economic development of Con Dao district in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province by 2020. Accordingly, Con Dao is oriented to become a high-quality tourism and service economic zone.
In addition, Con Dao is asked to preserve Vietnam’s revolutionary relics and develop Con Dao national park.
The Decision said that the development of Con Dao district must fit with its potentials to contribute to the national integration in the world economy, ensure national security and incorporate in the development in the South.
To tap Con Dao’s potentials, each step must be taken seriously for sustainable, stable and efficient development.
By 2020, Con Dao has a population of 50,000 people with the gross domestic product (GDP) of 1800-2000 USD per capita. The district is expected to attract 200,000-250,000 tourists per year by 2010 and 500,000-700,000 by 2020.
A branch of the Vietnamese historic revolutionary museum will be built in Con Dao district by 2020. Photos, pictures and prison models that the French colonialist and American imperialist used to keep Vietnamese heroic soldiers during the war in Con Dao will be displayed in the museum. The district will repair Hang Duong cemetery and other Con Dao’s historic relics.
Con Dao, in addition, will promote modern seafood processing industry for export and workshops to repair ships and other means of transportation for construction. These activities, however, must be ensured not to affect Con Dao’s environment.
Con Dao will carry out a number of constructions for transportation : improve its road system, construct a road to connect Co Ong and Dam Tre, upgrade Ben Dam fishing port, set up a tourism port in Con Son bay and complete Co Ong airport.
Capital for investment comes from the state budget, the official development aids (ODA) and credit loan. Besides, Con Dao will issue some policies to attract investment into the district.
